The six project management principles defined in the PMBOK® Guide, 8th Edition are fundamental guiding principles for effective practice. They are as follows. Each principle is simplified into an actionable, practical form designed to be applicable across diverse project management situations.
- Adopt a Holistic View Emphasizes viewing the project as a whole, rather than as separate tasks or processes. It involves understanding how individual activities impact the entire organization and stakeholders, and managing the project holistically to create value.
- Focus on ValueProjects aim not only to achieve deliverables and meet constraints but to maximize the “value” they provide. This principle encourages attention not just to outputs (deliverables) but also to the expected outcomes and value.
- Embed Quality Into Processes and Deliverables It is crucial to embed practices aimed at high quality into standards throughout the entire project lifecycle. This ensures quality is not something verified later, but rather is built into deliverables from the outset.
- Be an Accountable Leader Project managers and leaders take specific responsibility for their actions and decisions, thereby providing trust and direction to the project team and stakeholders. This leadership builds the foundation for project success.
- Integrate Sustainability Within All Project Areas Support an approach that incorporates environmental, social, and economic sustainability into every project process and deliverable. This ensures projects consider not only short-term goals but also long-term impacts.
- Build an Empowered Culture We foster a culture where team members feel free to voice opinions and pursue innovation. Within this culture, individual potential is maximized, enhancing project execution effectiveness.
The purpose of these principles is to increase flexibility in project management practice and support project teams in creating greater value. Each principle is presented with concrete examples of actions and initiatives to achieve it.
